Product Reviews
Lenovo ThinkPad Twist S230u 3347 - 12.5" - Core i3 3217U - Windows 8 Pro 64 3.3 5 3 3
I bought fifty+ of these and it's been a sporadic grab bag of results.I like the slim design, it travels easily and it feels good in one hand when in slate/tablet mode, but it feels deceptively heavy for how it looks.Echoing (again) what both Joey and Mike have said, we've had issues with the rotation of the screen and it not necessarily wanting to rotate back leaving me shaking the think like an etch-a-sketch.I hear what Mike is saying about the SSD if it's being handled a lot. I actually found the drive protection setting that Lenovo installed hoping to protect the machine in case of a fall, but had to turn it off or to low sensitivity since it was causing more interruptions than helping.I like the overall performance when it is working well, fifty percent of my users have no problem and it churns along like a good little workstation, but fifty percent have experienced issues with it taking so long as to waste entire class periods waiting for it to wake up from sleep. Most just hard shutting it down by the power button and turning it back on to lose whatever work they might have been in the middle of.I would finally say to avoid the USB 2.0 port replicator with digital video. One in five times that the users go to use them, the video fails and all of the drivers have to be removed, machine rebooted and the port replicator reinstalled to get them projecting again. Most have just fallen back to dongle and usb hub at their teaching station. October 9, 2013
We currently have 4 of these deployed along with 3 of their i5 brethren. solid units, good build quality, but I can echo the rotation issues mentioned by Joey D below. The i3 proc is good enough for up to moderate multitasking, but I would not recommend it for anything beyond that. It also doesn't support AES-NI, making systems utilizing Bitlocker that little bit slower on top of it. Finally, pairing it up with the Lenovo USB3 dock (and then running dual 1080p screens off that) will also result in a good chunk of your system's CPU power going to handle that (15-40%).The only truly significant advisory I can offer for these is this: if they are to be at all used as a tablet (e.g., lots of movement, being passed around, etc) buy them with the SSD option and skip the spindle. In our usage scenario (mobile employee with a high amount of field time, sometimes literally) we experienced a lot of head parking even under standard rotate-and-fold routines. The SSD option eliminated all that, and also vastly improves performance as one might expect. If you swap an SSD in and replace the spindle, the rebuild process goes perfectly smoothly and the 24GB cache SSD simply shows up as a separate drive.I'd personally go for the i5 / SSD option if possible, but I believe the i3 is perfectly adequate for most who would be interested in this style of system. I've been using one of these, albeit with a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD, for a couple months in a sysadmin role and find it good enough 90% of the time. September 24, 2013
Bought one to do testing on for a medical app. Very sturdy, but there are significant bugs with the display rotation. These are patched with a hotfix, but the hotfix is not included out-of-the-box. It performs very well as a laptop, but is a bit unwieldy as a tablet due to the 12.5" display being overlapped by the keyboard / unit body. This overlap is at least 1/4 in on all sides, putting it well over 13" diagonal. January 24, 2013
