Product Reviews
Fortinet FortiGate 60D - security appliance 3.3 5 33 33
I have used FortiNet devices for a few years now. They do have a learning curve to them because they are very flexible and that creates some unavoidable complexity, but I think the result is worth the effort. To be fair, I haven't used other UTM devices so I can't compare with others in the same class. But once you learn them, FortiGates are excellent.I have had to use support a few times over the years, and my experience has been just the opposite of the horror stories entered here. Every time I needed support, I had a competent engineer who remoted in and methodically checked through everything until the problem was found.Honestly, my experience has been very positive and I use FortiGate UTMs exclusively for my clients. better than some of their products but because of support issues with Fortinet I would be hesitant to use their products. January 16, 2014
So far so good with two of these deployed as primary firewalls for dual WAN environments. Failover works well and load balancing seems to work however that was never a reason for getting one so we aren't paying attention to any possible performance gains. Haven't had to use support yet and I have heard that Fortinet has been less than helpful in the past. Overall, though I like the 60C. May 23, 2013
We have both 60B and 60C units deployed. Products are very dependable and cost effective. Great service and support. We use most of the features including VPN, Content/Web Filtering and WiFi. The GUI is very good but some of the advanced configuration requires CLI knowledge. These units are great for small businesses and branch offices. February 27, 2013
This is an older model, so you will want to look into the FortiGate 60C or 60D now. FortiGate certainly offers one of the most full featured and best value when it comes to business UTMs/Firewalls. Not having to pay per-user license fees is a benefit, because realistically the device doesn't care if it's 1 users or 1000 users as long as it is spec'd right.I can agree with some of the comments about tech support taking some time to get back to you if it is a non-critical issue submitted via the support site, it can take up to 24 hours for a response, but their support has been competent and able to resolve the issue. If it is a critical issue, just pick up the phone and call support and you will usually get helped right away. February 27, 2013
We use these at remote sales offices for VPN and Content Filtering / Logging purposes (you have to make sure they are actually working, right?). They are fast, reliable, and since the great thing about Fortigate is that the interface acts the same across hardware platforms, they are super easy to deploy and manage. January 29, 2013
Low end, mediocre, overpriced device with really bad support. If you can't get support, there is no reason to pay a premium for this type of device. Build your own at that point. January 20, 2013
I have been using Fortigates (a few different models) since 2006. For the most part, the units are solid and the uptime is great. Our VPNs have been super reliable. I have given up completely on their useless support system and just try to deal with any software bugs myself. I have had tickets that have been open for months without response or resolution. When I was filing tickets in the past, the resolutions were always "upgrade the firmware" and at least 2 resolutions were wipe out your OS and reinstall. The application signatures are hit and miss these days so I really don't know what the deal is, they used to be not to bad on the support end of things (years ago).We sprung for a Fortilogger which I rarely reference because I do not find the information that I can extract from it all that useful.
