The Catalyst 4500 Series with CenterFlex technology provides scalable nonblocking Layer 2-4 switching with Secure, Flexible, Non-Stop communications, enabling business resilience for enterprises, small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), and Metro Ethernet customers deploying business-critical applications. CenterFlex technology is the technology enabled by the Supervisor 6-E centralized ASICs, which deliver the highest centralized performance and configuration flexibility in the industry. CenterFlex technology enables granular optimization of real-time voice, video and data communication, maximizing performance and enhancing end user experience. The new "E-Series" with CenterFlex technology is designed with unprecedented backward and forward compatibility delivering exceptional investment protection and deployment flexibility to meet the evolving needs of organizations of all sizes.

The Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series includes two series of Catalyst chassis: the E-Series and Classic Series chassis. Catalyst 4500 E-Series chassis are extremely flexible and will support both 6 Gbps and 24Gbps per line card slot. Integrated resiliency in both hardware and software minimizes network downtime, helping to ensure workforce productivity, profitability, and customer success.

The Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series extends control to the network edge with intelligent network services, including sophisticated quality of service (QoS), predictable performance, advanced security, comprehensive management, and integrated resiliency. Scalability of these intelligent network services is made possible with dedicated specialized resources known as ternary content addressable memory (TCAM). Ample TCAM resources (up to 384,000 entries) enable "high feature capacity," which provides wire-speed routing/switching performance independent of provisioning of services such as QoS and security. This helps ensure scalability for today's network requirements with ample room for future growth.

With unprecedented forward and backward compatibility spanning multiple generations, the Catalyst 4500 Series reduces the cost of ownership by minimizing recurring operational expenses, improving return on investment (ROI).

Cisco Catalyst 4506-E - switch - rack-mountable 4.5 5 6 6
Works, but is limited when it comes to software updates due to low memory that isn't upgradable. Bought new for a little over $900. Over priced for what I got. Way too complex to complete tasks that should be simple. October 4, 2009
These were great little firewalls for a 10mbps or less connection. A few we had in service has some motherboard power regulation problems, which was never an issue until EOL. If your's starts rebooting a lot, check the capacitors near the processor; if you're good with a soldering iron you can replace them and probably get another 20 years from these things! I manage a remote site in another astate and the 506 is what helps me manage it. between spiceworks, AD and the pix, I have complete control over the netwrok and its users. I use a VPN to the PIX to get access and also allow the users to remote in the same way. I have a guest VLAN that has outside access only running on the same wires but with different virtual interface on the pix. this has been running flawlessly for over 4 years. August 21, 2009
Please don't make me "up"grade! Just let me keep paying for SmartNets and not having service issues for the Dallas branch....the most dependable equipment I have there. August 21, 2009
Does it's job if you don't need more than it offers - very stable, used it as our main office firewall/vpn appliance (endpoint for 15 site to site vpn's and rarely used remote access vpn) and it certainly did it's job until we upgraded to the ASA series. April 23, 2009
IMO, this was a revolutionary firewall. Secure VPNs are the bread and butter of this device. Plus, at the time of writing, you can pick one up on eBay for $300, a steal for all of the features. You can use SDM with an upgraded IOS but you would be wise to brush up on your CLI skills for this firewall. November 18, 2008
