IT organizations need a routing and switching foundation to serve as the backbone for both the wired and wireless networks. The backbone needs to be highly available, redundant and efficient. In many cases, organizations are making the move to improve their wired network performance by upgrading the backbone to 10, 40 and 100GB Ethernet.

Keep Your Workflow Moving

Data Center Network (DCN) holds a pivotal role in a data center, as it connects all of the wired network resources together. DCN should have features that servers could benefit from such as, Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) for FabricPath/TRILL.

Keep Your Users Productive

Enterprise-Campus Networks (ECN) should be just as reliable as the DCN but able to support many more features users may require, such as Bonjour — a more granular way to implement Quality of Service (QoS) and Multicast. For troubleshooting, ECN could benefit from Netflow support and in some case packet sniffers integrated into a switch or router device within the wired network.

In a recent CDW Advisory Board Decision Maker Study, we discovered that while many IT leaders deploy new routers and switches to replace aging hardware within their wired network, others do so to support new technology projects, such as voice over IP solutions and 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
