  • What Is Telephony and VoIP?
Telephony refers to the systems within an organization that provide telecommunication services, handsets, mobile devices, and carrier services.

Voice over IP (VoIP) provides telephone services over your IP network and is the most popular of the advanced applications that organizations deploy in their enhancement of their communication and collaboration plan, and integrates well with other advanced applications.

What Options are Right for Me?
There are several telephony and VoIP options to choose from. Your CDW account manager and telephony specialist can help you decide which of the following options best meets your needs:

Single-Number Reach - This integrates multiple devices regardless of platform (cellular, analog, digital or IP) into a single number, allowing the simultaneous search and ring of desk phone, cell phone, smartphone, etc. Single-number reach allows users to answer a call regardless of which phone device they have access to. In addition, customers and coworkers only require one number rather than multiple numbers, eliminating the guesswork of which device is appropriate at a given time.

Telephony Devices - This refers to the handset for wired lines or the mobile device for wireless lines. Both offer a variety of features and options to meet your needs.

Soft Phone - A soft phone is an application that places the handset functionality onto your notebook PC. This allows you to literally take your desk phone with you wherever you go. As long as you have access to your corporate network, you can send and receive calls, check voicemail, view call logs, participate in conference calling functions and access all other features of your desk phone.

Carrier Services - Carrier services are also referred to as telecom services. These include both wired and wireless lines that provide access to voice and data communications as well as most common telephone and Internet services.

Web and Audio Conferencing - This simply includes adding a webcam onto a PC. Organizations with a converged network (voice, video and data) can now "see" the people they are speaking with, thereby gaining visual feedback and developing a more personal connection.

Reporting Analytics and Management - This option allows organizations to run detailed call reports and monitor telephony systems.

How Will Telephony and VoIP Solutions Benefit Me?
A successfully-implemented telephony and voice-over-IP strategy can deliver multiple benefits to any organization, including:

Reduce Costs - VoIP provides large cost savings over traditional PBX-based telephony systems. Additional cost savings can be realized if the VoIP system is operated on a single converged network. Add-on call features such as voicemail, caller ID, conferencing, forwarding, and long-distance calling are included with VoIP systems. Travel costs can also be reduced when implementing web and audio conferencing features.

Increased Communication - With the ability to add soft phones, single-number reach and presence technology, users can connect with each other the first time, regardless of where they are.

Increased Efficiencies - VoIP makes it easy to add additional phone lines. This allows you to grow your system faster and more cost-effectively. Collaboration and communication is also easier, allowing workers to be more productive.
